Words of Love Words I Love

Byron George

Words are Fun

As a young schoolboy, my friends used to mock me at times for my love of words and their derivation. While they were off playing I would be sat in a quiet corner reading a dictionary. Even then I had a love of words and from whence they came.

There was a recent article on onomatopoeia that had already sparked something from way back in my sub-conscious and was with me all night through my sleep and in my waking, I had to jump out of bed hastily, excited to get this piece down before my brain slowed.

The theme that came to me was to go through the old Oxford or Collins English dictionaries that I have on the shelf here at home and write an alphabet of love.

These are either words of love or words I love, 26 letters followed by a few beautiful words and a short description, some of which have an underlying meaning, others just for fun.

A aAmour. What a start. A love affair, or lover especially a secret one.

Amorist. This is me, a person who is in love or who writes about love.

Accouchement. The action of giving birth. (who could not love the word?)

Accoucheur. A male midwife.

B b — Bardo. A state of existence between death and rebirth (Tibetan Buddhism)
