The Tories of all extremes have always used hate to generate votes, they like the US Republican party are deep down mongers of bullying. Find a minority and they'll rail against it. Conservatism is after all is said and done built on the fear of loss of a metaphorical comfort blanket. They hate change, even if it turns out for the better. Their natural instinct is to fight change, whether it is universal suffrage to take power away from the landed gentry or votes for women. Next is race, then LGBTQ+ , it is in a conservative's DNA to hang onto their power base.

Witness the uproar all around the other day when the Times hinted that Sunak was considering a Swiss style deal with the EU. The ERG, Farage all those obnoxious worms came out swearing to fight it.

It all goes to show how weak David Cameron was when allowing the ERG and pals to dictate allowing & the terms of the Brexit referendum, and how right John Major was when he called those same members of his own party "Bastards."

I hope you don't mind but I like my answer here so much I'm going to reublish most of it myself. My God I hate the ERG in return.
