I don't think that is only in America. It has happened here in the UK with Johnson. The whole Brexit issue was based on the same ideas.

Other countries such as The Philippines, Thailand have also succumbed to the same nationalism.

The people in general have always been the canon fodder of ruthless leaders. It is how so many wars happen.
