How do you get those moderate ‘haves’ to go against them? An age-old question, Blair succeeded for a while and understood that you had to carry the majority to win power, then gradual change could be achieved. Unfortunately, being in power too long corrupted his viewpoint & he sucked up to one of the worst Republicans in Dubya, and his successor went too far away from that centre-left position. That has split the opposition here, so the Conservatives benefit from the split.
What we can hope for is that the Conservatives do what they always have done in the past and shoot themselves in the foot, either corruption, or an over the top policy like the poll-tax that started the rot for Thatcher. But that the opposition has to appear electable also. You can’t get change unless you get power first. The opposition has to do a deal with the other parties to get a more proportional voting system established otherwise, these Tories are going to start more of the tactics like the Republicans in voter suppression. They are already seeking to do that by having voter id laws brought in, when we have never had voter fraud that would make a difference at election times.
Or a revolution, but that would play into their hands.
