Ha ha, yes, I am also really old these days but still a rebellious upstart!
Those Nuns had a real reputation for cruelty don't they!
I remember my boyhood pal who went to a Catholic school saying when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. His answer was a Priest, so he could use his belt on other people! Quite shocking to me even then.
My state school decreed that we would all write in an italicised style with Osmiroid fountain pens and nibs, and they called it "Barking Writing" after our town's name. My parent's had to order a special left-handed nib and I got lots of comments on how bad my writing was, many blots and a strange scrawl. We had to get used to being called "cack-handed" (Cack = shit).
After about 2 years of that experiment they gave up, and retired the old Deputy Head woman who decreed it. She was a leftover from the days when the school was separated by Boys/Girls and we had become the first year of co-eds. This was my senior school, not sure if that is what you call 'Grade School?'
How to traumatise people early on eh? lol.
Violence on us kids by teachers was quite common also, with the slipper or cane used regularly.
